A. Abbot
Circle. Abbot Academy was named after Madame Sarah Abbot of Andover,
who donated the original funds to build the first building. The Abbot name and
tradition continue at Andover through the Abbot Academy Fund, established after
the merger to promote education with “special attention from time to time to the
goals of the education of female youth.” Like Phillips Academy, Abbot had a
clearly defined center of campus, the Abbot Circle, formed by Draper Hall with
Abbot Hall and McKeen Hall on either side. Ceremonies, commencement processions,
winding of the May pole, Phillips serenades and the Centennial in 1929 all took
place on the Abbot Circle.
